Report: Ipswich Town U19 Shadows 1-0 Grimsby Town U19 Shadows

Town made the long journey down the east coast to Ipswich in the last 16 of the EFL CEFA U19 Cup.

The game was played on an artificial surface at Ipswich Town’s training ground on Playford Road in drizzly conditions.

Ipswich had the first chance of the game inside 5 minutes but after rounding Davies in the Mariners net the Ipswich front man fired wide. Grimsby settled in the game and after a quarter of an hour Wootton took aim from 20 yards but his effort cleared the cross bar.

There were very few chances in the first half, Kendall had one blocked from the edge of the area whilst the tractor boys hit the side netting. Then just before the interval Ipswich were awarded a controversial free kick on the half way line which the took quickly. The no9 took aim from 25 yards and his effort cannoned off the underside of the bar and out, unfortunately for Town the linesmen judged it had bounced over the line and signalled a goal.

Grimsby throughout the second half looked threatening from right. Kendall, Haines and Dunn all getting close from a cross into the box but good defending and bad luck kept them out. Much like the first half there was very little goal mouth action and neither keeper was really called into action. Grimsby through Lofts up top for the last 5 minutes but other than a Woods cross that landed on the roof of the net they lacked quality at key moments to get back in the game.
