Franklin Banner Background Clearing

A Level results next steps

Didn’t get into your chosen uni? Don’t worry! Clearing is how universities and colleges fill any places they still have left on their courses.

Clearing is ready and waiting for you as soon as you get your results. You can find the official clearing list using the UCAS Search Tool. Be quick though, as places on popular courses fill up fast!

You can use clearing if:

  • You didn’t receive any offers (or none you wanted to accept)
  • You didn’t meet the conditions of your offers
  • You’ve changed your mind about what / where you want to study
  • You’ve paid the UCAS multiple choice application fee

Clearing Hotline Numbers

Click or tap the link below to access an exhaustive list of university clearing hotline numbers. This might not include all numbers, but any missing ones can be found on the university’s website.

Remember, it’s important to call the uni yourself so the admission tutor can see you have a genuine interest in the course. Lines will be very busy, but most open until 8pm on 15th August, so don’t give up. Be prepared and be patient.

You might also want to call universities before clearing opens so that you’re able to add the university as soon as Track opens. Remember, when you call, you’ll need your UCAS number and clearing number (this will be available on the UCAS hub), personal statement, and your grades.

You’ll also need a pen and paper to write down university information, phone numbers, names of people you speak with, and call back times.

How can you apply using clearing?

1) Ask for advice

Talk to someone at College - they can guide you through alternative courses, subjects, or unis that you might consider instead

2) See what's available

Use the official UCAS Search Tool. Consider different subjects and keep checking if there's a course you really want a place on - vacancies may arise

3) Talk to unis/colleges about clearing spaces

As if they'd accept you; get informal offers over the phone, ask about accommodation

4) Add your clearing choice

Once you've been offered a place, add your clearing choice on your UCAS application. This counts as you definitely accepting the offer
