Empowering Year 10 Students: Highlights from the North East Lincs Skills Fair!

We had a great day at the Grimsby Auditorium meeting year 10 students from across the region and showcasing our amazing courses at the annual Skills Fair.

Showcasing skills

The North East Lincolnshire Skills Fair attracted over 1,850 Year 10 students who met employers and education providers alike to find out about all the options available to realise their potential and achieve their aspirations.

We attended with an entourage of our incredible staff to introduce eager students to all our courses. We gave away plenty of Franklin goodies and our stylish new tote bags filled with lots of handy info about the college and our courses.

Although we were handing out goodies in the foyer alongside our Learning Support and Centre for Professional Development teams, we had plenty of other exciting stands across the event. Check out the write-up below for more!

In the STEM Village

Our Social Sciences were well represented at the entrance of the STEM Village. As soon as you came in, you were greeted with insights into Psychology, Criminology, and Sociology. Judging by the number of people asking after these courses, interest was high.

We also brought six of our high-spec gaming PCs from our state-of-the-art Esports Suite to pit year 10s against one another in a Rocket League LAN. There was never a dull moment with students keen to compete against their friends and find out more about our amazing Esports course.

It also provided a perfect opportunity to talk about our Creative Computing and Digital Games Design courses. Not forgetting teachers of Creative Media, Film Studies, and Digital Film & TV Production, who were more than happy to chat about their courses to groups of interested students.

One table over was our STEM subjects. Maths drew a crowd with their engaging card and roulette display that taught about the perils of gambling. Our science stands, meanwhile, drew plenty of attention with fascinating displays of laboratory supplies, electrical equipment, and a life-size skeleton.

In the Main Hall

Over in the Main Hall, our English and Modern Foreign Languages stand challenged perceptions with students encouraged to guess which degrees celebrities had taken. They were surprised to learn how just how versatile language degrees were and just how many different amazing careers and progression pathways are open to them.

A similar challenge was to be had at the Government & Politics stand where students confronted their preconceptions and got to know this insightful course better.

Our Art, Design & Fashion stand displayed a selection of works from students working in a variety of different media from paint on canvas to a bespoke dress on a mannequin. A whole host of year 10s stopped by keen to explore their creativity.

Our Health, Social & Childcare stand offered engaging games as well answering any questions about these fascinating and highly versatile courses.

Outside Marquees

The outside area was filled with exciting marquees showcasing yet more of our courses. In in the Performing Arts tent we shared with our neighbours at Grimsby Institute, cast members from our Little Mermaid production wowed the crowds with their vocal talents.

On the opposite side of the space, our Uniformed Protective Services team showcased a range of army gear and tested students’ strength with a series of weightlifting exercise. There was another challenge to be had from our Sports team, with students putting their footie skills to the test with a giant bullseye.

All in all, it was an amazing day, and we hope to see plenty of the same students at our upcoming Year 10 Experience Days here at Franklin. Check out some of our favourite snaps from the day in the slideshow below.
